A nine-block-long redevelopment project immediately north of downtown Milwaukee developed as a joint venture of nonprofit Milwaukee Redevelopment Corporation (MRC) and Mandel Group, Inc., a private real estate development firm. East Pointe is predominantly residential, with both rental and condominium units, but also features a neighborhood commercial center with a grocery store. The site had been acquired and cleared for a freeway in the 1960s, but the community opposition was so vigorous that construction was stopped. After the defeat of the freeway plan, the land remained undeveloped except for a soccer field and some community gardens. East Pointe replaces the homes that were lost in the 1960s with new ones that reflect the style and scale of the homes in the surrounding area, and the project has become a catalyst for further development in the neighborhood.
